Session 2: What Can Europe Learn from Other World Players?

Date: Thursday 26 April 12 - 02:00 pm to 03:00 pm

Type: Interactive sessions

The economic crisis started in most European countries in 2008. Nowadays, nearly all European countries face serious problems with rising debt and unemployment levels. In the meantime, many emerging countries as China and India but also countries as Canada and Australia manage rather well to expand their economies, keeping budget deficits and unemployment rates under control. Beside these social-economic problems Europe faces a demographic problem a fortiori. The EU working age population will decline by 40 million people by 2050. Therefore, growth will more than ever depend on Europeans’ productivity. Focusing on learning outcomes and excellence of education will be the key to better meet the labour market needs of today and tomorrow. Why are several non-EU countries so much better in outperforming us on coping with short and long-term hurdles? What are the best practices Europe can learn from these countries and take over or co-operate better?
