The upcoming fifth generation of telecommunication systems will be pivotal in shaping our digital economy and society over the next decade. 5G will bring major societal changes, transforming networks towards greater connectivity;between people, automotives, machines and objects. 5G will also enable a whole set of new services and applications. Developing 5G will be a key asset for Europe to compete in the global marketwith worldwide revenues for mobile operators expected to reach €225 billion annually by 2025. However every transformative opportunity also comes with challenges. The most pressing ones which need to be addressed include security and privacy as well as build the necessary infrastracture to prevent the digitial divide between urban and rural areas.
