Professor of Technology and Social Responsibility
Laurence Brooks, Professor of Technology and Social Responsibility and Deputy Director of the Centre for Computing and Social Responsibility (CCSR) at De Montfort University in Leicester, UK (https://laurencebrookssite.wordpress.com/). Laurence began his academic career with a BSc in Psychology (from the University of Bristol, UK) and a PhD in Engineering Management (from the University of Liverpool, UK). Laurence began his academic career as a lecturer in the Department of Computer Science at the University of York, followed by a long stay as an academic in the Department of Information Systems and Computing (now Department of Computer Science) at Brunel University London. Since 2016 he has been working at De Montfort University, first as Subject Group Leader for the Business Computing area and more recently as Director of the Doctoral College, leading the PhD programmes across the whole University. His research interests lie very much in how people interact and use technology, within a variety of contexts and most recently with the ethical aspects of emerging technologies. Laurence has been associated with a number of EU funded projects, and is currently Co-Investigator on the SHERPA project (https://www.project-sherpa.eu/) which focuses on the understanding the ways in which Smart Information Systems (such as AI) might impact ethics and human rights issues.
